The housing situation and living environment are important features of sociodemographics. Over 22 million buildings and their surroundings were assessed in person on site using various criteria.

Maintenance condition

Various individual criteria, such as facades and windows, are taken into account for the overall assessment of the building's general state of maintenance. School grades are assigned for the classification:

  • good
  • satisfactory
  • sufficient
  • deficient
  • insufficient

Building age (year of construction class)

The age of the building is determined according to the period of construction, which is divided into twelve classes:

  • before 1900
  • 1900 till 1945
  • 1946 till 1960
  • 1961 till 1970
  • 1971 till 1980
  • 1981 till 1985
  • 1986 till 1995
  • 1996 till 2000
  • 2001 until 2005
  • 2006 until 2010
  • 2011 to 2015
  • from 2016

Garden type and size

Garden type and size refer to the area visible from the outside. The expression of the variable is divided into seven categories:

 

  • No garden available
  • no garden visible
  • small garden
  • middle garden
  • big garden
  • Community plant small
  • Community facility large

Building type

The following classifications are used to describe buildings, taking into account the size and type of a building:

 

  • One or two family house
  • Row or semi-detached house
  • Apartment house
  • Apartment block
  • High-rise residential building
  • Terrace house
  • Farmhouse
  • Office or other building
  • Factory, warehouse

Design indicator

A number of criteria are included in the design characteristic of the house, such as an offset structure or individual floor plan, architectural features (e.g. turrets, conservatories), and color, facade or roof design. Individual design of e.g. doors or lighting are also considered in this characteristic. According to the number of individual criteria, there is the following class division:

 

  • Very individual
  • individual
  • slightly offset structure
  • some design features
  • few design features
  • No design features

Road type

The traffic density and the character of the road in which the Building is located determine the type of road, which is divided into six classes:

  • Main and through road
  • Side road with a lot of traffic
  • Side road with little traffic
  • Residents' street
  • traffic-calmed street
  • Pedestrian zone

Location of the house

The location of the house in the village is described with the following characteristics:

  • Village center location
  • Location
  • Location on the outskirts
  • outside the place

Building height

  • The height of the building in meters (available data level: building).
  • Number of floors per building (available data level: building)
  • The height of the building in meters above sea level (available data level: building).

Residential

School grades are assigned for the quality of the residential location, which is determined by comparing positive (e.g. proximity to green spaces and parks) and negative criteria (e.g. noise pollution):

  • very good
  • good
  • satisfactory
  • sufficient
  • deficient
  • insufficient

Construction

Based on the size of a building (= enclosed floor area), the construction method describes the exclusivity of a house. On-site data collection refers to the visible areas of the property. The classification of buildings is made in the following classes:

  • exclusive
  • good
  • satisfactory
  • sufficient
  • simply
  • very simple
